Social media (Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp, TikTok etc.) is what gets most people addicted to their phones. In recent times, social media has become a weapon of mass distraction, due to its addictive nature.
In a 2012 Study, Harvard Research Scientists reported that talking about one’s self through social media (updating your status, taking selfies, viewing likes, making comments etc.) activates the release of a neurotransmitter (a pleasure sensation) in the brain called Dopamine; which is the same chemical that makes one feel good when smoking, drinking, abusing drugs and gambling. This is what makes social media highly addictive.
The Dangers of Social Media include:
- One becomes less at school or work because of a distracted mind. You will forget things easily and lack coordination.
- Depression and loneliness quickly sets in, because social media “like” is not the same as real love, true friendship or acceptance.
- Always procrastinating - you keep postponing work, postponing time with people and time with God. It will make you a bad steward of your time and life.
- Loss of vision and passion for God and your destiny.
- It will expose you to witchcraft, porn and other evil addictions.
- It is deadly, demonic and can send you to hell.
Breaking The Addiction
-
Define your motive for using Social Media:
As a Christian, if your motive for using social media is not to get sinners saved and edify (mature) other Christians, then stay away from it. It can very easily take control of your life and destroy your destiny if you are not discerning. -
Develop a strict daily routine:
Have times allotted to your daily activities. For example:- Prayers and Bible Study: 5am - 7am
- Social Media: 8.30am - 9am
- Lectures or Work: 9am - 5pm
- Social Media: 7pm - 7.30pm
- Prayers and Bible Study: 8pm - 10pm.
This way, you can ensure you do not spend more time than necessary on social media. Such discipline might seem hard at first, but you must be determined if you want to win this fight (Prov. 29:1).
-
Go on a fast:
When the addiction gets too strong, deliberately go on a “social media fast”. Put your phone data connection off, (or do not subscribe) and give more time to prayer and Bible study. This will break the spell of addiction and fill you with the Holy Spirit afresh (Rom. 8:13).
Also, avoid being idle and secluded. Break free from your virtual world by getting used to interacting with people physically again. Engage in outdoor activities like sports, evangelism etc.
